Live With Fire: A July 4th Celebration of Freedom, Spiritedness, and the Brain That Makes It All Possible

There is a word that has no perfect translation in English. The ancient Greeks used it to describe the vital force that sits at the center of the human soul, the fire that drives a person toward courage, toward honor, toward a life fully and unapologetically lived.

The word is thumos.

Homer used it over seven hundred times in the Iliad and Odyssey. Plato named it the spirited element of the soul, the part that mediates between reason and desire, the force that makes a person not just think about greatness but actually pursue it. Thumos is the seat of courage and righteous passion. It is the vital life energy that propels human beings to act, to rise, to compete, to create. It is, as Homeric scholars have described it, "the vital force, the human capacity to feel and to think, taken together."

It is also the name of the company my co-founder and I built after leaving Naval Special Warfare.

That was not an accident.

July 4th and the Fire That Built a Nation

Every Fourth of July, I think about what it actually took to declare independence from the most powerful empire on earth in 1776. It was not just strategy. It was not just military genius. It was thumos: the spirited, burning refusal to accept a life of less than what a free person deserves.

The founders of this nation possessed something that the ancient Greeks would have immediately recognized. They felt the vital fire. They acted on it. And 250 years later, that fire is still the most American thing there is.

As a Navy SWCC operator, I served because that fire was in me. The same fire that drove me through Naval Special Warfare selection, through deployments, through every moment that demanded more than I thought I had. The military does not create thumos. It reveals it. It takes the spiritedness already living inside a person and forges it into something precise, disciplined, and formidable.

July 4th is a celebration of that fire. Not just in the people who carried a rifle, but in every American who has ever refused to shrink, refused to settle, and chose to live at full capacity rather than at a comfortable fraction of it.

This is what we celebrate today. And this blog is my way of honoring it by talking about how to keep that fire burning.

What Thumos Really Means for How You Live

The ancient concept of thumos was not just philosophical poetry. It was a practical description of what happens when a person is operating at their fullest. When the mind is sharp, the spirit is engaged, and the body has the energy to match the ambition inside it.

Thumos is the metabolic energy of the soul, the spiritedness that mediates between reason and desire, serving as the emotional muscle required for both courage and self-preservation. Plato believed that when thumos is in harmony with reason, it enables individuals to exhibit courage, pursue truth, and live virtuously. While thumos is often translated as spiritedness, heart, passion, will, courage, boldness, or fierceness, it is really a combination of all those descriptions and yet still something more, something that has no single English equivalent.

Here is what I know about thumos from lived experience: you cannot live it fully when your brain is depleted. You cannot access the fire when you are running on chronic fatigue, brain fog, fragmented sleep, and a gut-brain axis that is inflamed and out of balance. The spiritedness the Greeks described is not just a metaphor. It is a biological state, and it requires a biological foundation to sustain.

This is the insight that launched a company.

The Mission Born From Service

My co-founder and I served together at Special Boat Team TWELVE. We became SWCC operators through Naval Special Warfare selection, one of the most demanding selection processes in the U.S. military. We deployed together. We performed together. And over time, we started asking the same question independently before eventually asking it together: what does the science actually say about keeping the brain performing at its best over a lifetime?

The honest answer was that the nootropic and brain health supplement industry was full of noise and thin on substance. Products were underdosed. Ingredients were hidden in proprietary blends. The gut-brain axis, one of the most significant frontiers in neuroscience, was almost entirely ignored. Most brands were selling stimulants and calling it cognitive performance.

We knew what real performance felt like. We had operated in environments where mental clarity, focus, and cognitive resilience under sustained stress were not optional. And we were not willing to settle for a supplement that delivered anything less than what the science actually supported.

So we built it ourselves. Eight clinically dosed nootropic ingredients. Every dosage grounded in peer-reviewed research. No hidden blends. No shortcuts. A complete daily brain and gut health system designed for people who take their cognitive performance as seriously as their physical fitness.

We named it Thumos because the product exists to fuel the fire. To support the vital spiritedness that drives everything worth doing.

The Science of Living Fully: What Thumos Daily Brain + Gut Support Does

Living with thumos, with genuine spiritedness, focus, and vitality, requires the brain to be operating in the right biological environment. Here is what each ingredient in the formula contributes to that environment.

Cognizin Citicoline (200mg) is the anchor of the formula and one of the most extensively researched nootropic ingredients available. Citicoline is a naturally occurring brain chemical that has neuroprotective effects, meaning it helps protect and repair the cells, structure, and function of your nervous system. It is available as a dietary supplement used to enhance thinking ability and memory. A 2026 real-world cohort study tracking 100 patients found meaningful improvements across cognitive, functional, and emotional outcomes over six to nine months of use. Cognizin Citicoline is not a trace amount included for marketing purposes. At 200mg per serving, it is a clinical dose of the most bioavailable form of citicoline available, and it supports the brain energy metabolism and neuronal membrane integrity that determine how sharp and present you feel every day.

L-Glutamine (1,000mg) and Inulin from Agave (1,000mg) address the gut-brain axis, the bidirectional communication highway between your microbiome and your brain that most brain health supplements ignore entirely. Roughly 90 percent of the body's serotonin is produced in the gut, not the brain. When the gut is healthy, the brain receives the neurochemical signals it needs to regulate mood, sustain energy, and support mental clarity. This is the biological foundation beneath everything else in the formula.

L-Tyrosine (500mg) fuels the production of dopamine and norepinephrine, the neurotransmitters that drive motivation, focus, and the drive to pursue what matters most. This is the ingredient that supports thumos at the neurochemical level: the desire for excellence, the push toward a worthy goal, the refusal to coast when more is possible.

L-Theanine (200mg) promotes alpha brainwave activity, the calm, alert, and fully present mental state that the ancient Greeks might have recognized as the mind working in perfect harmony with the spirited soul. Not wired. Not anxious. Focused, clear, and fully engaged.

Coenzyme Q10, Nano-Emulsified (100mg) powers the mitochondria inside every brain cell, the cellular energy infrastructure that determines how much cognitive fuel is available for the demands of a fully lived life. The nano-emulsified form delivers significantly superior bioavailability, meaning this ingredient actually reaches the cells that need it most.

Taurine (500mg) provides neuroprotection and cellular hydration, building the structural resilience that allows the brain to sustain cognitive performance across decades, not just days.

Natural Caffeine from Green Tea (50mg) delivers the clean, smooth, sustained energy that supports mental clarity and alertness without the spike and crash that depletes the nervous system. This is what real clean energy feels like, present, focused, and stable.

July 4th Is a Call to Live With Fire

The ancient Greeks believed thumos was essential to what they called andreia, the fullest expression of human virtue and vitality. Recovering an understanding of thumos, and its role as the vital life and energy source of the soul, is one of the great tasks of living deliberately. They believed that every person carried this fire, and that the great work of a life was not to suppress it but to channel it toward something worthy.

On Independence Day, I think about that a lot. I think about the operators I served with who carried that fire into impossible environments and brought it home. I think about the founders of this nation who bet everything on a spirited refusal to live less freely than they deserved. I think about my co-founder and me, sitting in a team room somewhere, talking about ingredients and research and the idea that the people who serve hardest deserve the best support for the brains that carry them.

Thumos the company exists because thumos the concept is real. The vital fire is real. And keeping it burning, protecting the brain health, cognitive longevity, and biological vitality that make a fully lived life possible, is work worth doing every single day.

This Fourth of July, celebrate freedom by choosing to live at full capacity. Feed the fire. Protect the brain. Honor the spirit.

Happy Independence Day. Live with fire.
